The Environment Agency and their contractors have started the planned works to replace EA Bowers Weir just above Bowers Lock. The works include replacing the accommodation bridge connecting towpath to lock. The towpath above the lock to old Clay Lane Bridge and upper lock landing bay will be closed for the duration of the works which are scheduled to take 16 weeks but may take longer.
A temporary pontoon has been installed opposite the usual locking landing bay on the non towpath side to facilitate lock access and operation. A temporary path running down the non towpath side of the navigation links the lock landing bay, lock and towpath below the lock and the towpath above at the old Clay Lane Bridge. The route is signed. The towpath diversion and use of temporary lock landing bay come into operation on Thursday 25th April 2019.
Passage past the weir is unaffected, although boaters are advised to proceed with caution.
